DENNIS LOWELL SWIFT

Dennis Lowell Swift, age 77, of Uhrichsville, O., passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016, at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia, following complications from cancer.

Born on May 21, 1938 at Akron, Dennis is the son of the late Lowell R. and Grace E. (Defenbaugh) Swift Leopard.

Dennis is survived by his wife, whom he married on September 26, 1959 in Akron, Vicki (Seamens) Swift, who survives of the home.  Also surviving are his children Traci Lea (Swift) Powell and her husband Tim Powell of Green Springs, O., and Timothy Lowell Swift and his wife Lisa Swift of Wooster, O.; his grandchildren Troy Powell, Taryn (Powell) Trzcinski, Thane Powell and Natalie Swift; sisters-in-law Judy Mest of Clayton, ID and Linda (Chuck) Rotter of Ravenna; nieces and nephews Jerry, Jeff, Joel and Jon Acuff, Tammy Kemp, Kelly Smith, Jim and Jeff Allman and Toni Couliard.

In addition to his parents, Dennis is preceded in death by his stepfather Duane Leopard, his sister Jeanine Daire (Swift) Acuff, and his aunt Leona (Defenbaugh) Grove.

In 1956, Dennis graduated from Coventry High School in Akron and attended Akron University.  Dennis served in the United States Air Force, Airman 1st Class, having enlisted in September 1961.  His basic training was at Lakland AFB in San Antonio, TX; communication school at Shepherd AFB in Witchita Falls, TX; tours in Rhein Mein Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany and McDill AFB in Tampa, FL.  He was honorably discharged in September 1965.

In 1970, Dennis and his family moved to Uhrichsville.  He retired from Kempthorn Motors in Canton and worked 20 years for Fleming Office Equipment in New Philadelphia.  He also spent 13 years at the Akron Division Office of Standard Oil of Ohio.  Dennis was a 40 year member of the Dennison Rotary where he was a past president. He was also a former board member of the Twin City Hospital in Dennison.  As a member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Stillwater, he served as Ley Leader for many years.  Dennis was a classic car enthusiast, and an avid hunter.  He enjoyed boating, camping, target shooting, modern western square dancing and he loved his dogs.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, February 21, 2016,  from 6 to 8 p.m.,  and Monday, February 22, 2016, from 11 to 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville, with Pastor David Koch officiating.
