OWEN KENNETH HICKS

Owen Kenneth Hicks, age 98, of Uhrichsville, O., passed away on Monday, January 7, 2019, at Hennis Care Centre in Dover, following a period of declining health.

The son of the late Thomas B. and Celestine V. (Stone) Hicks, Owen was born November 28, 1920, in Uhrichsville, O.  He graduated from Uhrichsville High School and served in the United States Army during World War II. Owen retired in 1983 from Timken Co., after 30 years, where he was employed as a material handler.

On September 8, 1948, Owen married Esther (Haugh) Hicks, who passed away on April 19, 2009.  They celebrated 60 years of marriage.   In addition to his parents and wife, Owen is preceded in death by a brother Harry and three infant sisters.

Owen joined the Nazarene Church in 1948 and taught Sunday School from 1961 until he went to Hennis at the age of 96.  He held various positions and was very active for over 70 years.  Owen enjoyed playing guitar, singing, gardening and he was most remembered for his jokes and stories.

Owen is survived by his children Ken P. (Louise) Hicks of New Philadelphia and Michael D. Hicks of New Philadelphia; siblings Art (Carol) Hicks of Mansfield, Allen (Doreen) Hicks of Dover, Bonnie Ingland of New Philadelphia and Frank Hicks of Uhrichsville; grandchildren Beth (Brian) Mattheyse of Mesa, AZ, Julie Hicks (companion Kirby) of Prescott, AZ, David Hicks of Mesa, AZ, Jeremy Hicks (fiancé Sarah) of Palm Coast, FL, David (Vanessa) Rose of Poquoson, VA and Derek Rose of Clovis, NM; great grandchildren Jocelyn, Meredith, Kylie, Blake, Chase and David.

Funeral services for Owen will be held at 11 a.m., on January 11, 2019, at the Uhrichsville Nazarene Church with Pastor Mike Travis officiating.  Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
