Philip Schumacher Obituary

PHILIP JOE SCHUMACHER

Philip Joe Schumacher received his heavenly reward on Friday, December 16, 2022.  He was born October 11, 1941, to Ralph and Florence (Wenger) Schumacher.

He was a graduate of Tuscarawas High School and went on to attend Otterbein University and graduated from Ohio State University in 1965, with a bachelor’s degree in education.  He later earned a master’s degree at Akron University.

On June 6, 1971, he married Karen Elizabeth Weber (who survives) at St. James Lutheran Church in Tuscarawas.  They enjoyed 51 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by their son Philip Daniel (Danny) Schumacher. Surviving are their son, Brian Schumacher, and their daughter, Annette (John) York, and their granddaughters, Isabel and Grace.

Phil was a dedicated educator, having spent 42 years in the classroom, teaching at Garaway Jr. High and Garaway High School before finishing his career at Buckeye Career Center.

He was a lifelong member at St. James Lutheran Church, serving on their council.  He was active in the Men’s Group and enjoyed working the Pancake breakfasts and the Heavenly Hot Dog lunches at the church.

Phil served his community as a town council member, Warwick Township Trustee, and charter President of the Warwick Lions Club.  He was proud of taking part in bringing Dr. Dale Kollman and a branch of the United Bank to Tuscarawas.

He served a term on the Indian Valley School Board then went on to serve over 30 years on the Tuscarawas County and East Central Ohio ESC Board of Education. 

In addition, he served as secretary of the Dennison Rotary Club for numerous years.

Calling hours will be from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville.

Private funeral services will be observed with the burial to follow at St. James Lutheran Church, with the Dr. Rev. Byron Arledge officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church.
