REV. HARRY “BUD” H. MILLIGAN
Rev. Harry (“Bud”) H. Milligan of Dennison, Ohio, died on December 15, 2015, at New Dawn Nursing Home in Dover, Ohio. He was 90 years old.
Harry was born on April 1, 1925, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, but grew up in Newport, Ohio. His parents were Jesse P. and Bernice Fuller Milligan of Uhrichsville. He graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1943.
On April 20, 1946, he married Lola M. Scott of Newport. They were married for almost 70 years. They had two children Tom L. of Wooster, Ohio and Jeffrey R. of Freeport, Ohio; four grandchildren Kevin Milligan of New Philadelphia, Ohio; Kyra Milligan of Freeport; Justin Milligan of Lancaster, Ohio; and Jason Milligan of Plain City, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren Olivia and Aliya of New Philadelphia; Kelly, Courtney and Alexis of Lancaster, Ohio.
As a young boy, Harry and his younger brother Robert performed as a singing duo in regional competitions. Harry was also an outstanding athlete, excelling in both track and baseball. During his service in the South Pacific during World War II, he was chosen by Leo Durocher of the New York Yankees to play on an all-star team. Subsequently, he was offered a contract to play professional baseball for the Seattle Mariners, at that time a farm team for the Cleveland Indians.
After the war, during which he served three years in the U.S. Navy, Harry began work at the Warner & Swasey Co., in New Philadelphia, advancing from night watchman to plant supervisor of sheet metal fabrication. He worked for the company for twenty years.
Around 1950, Harry began serving as a supply pastor in the United Methodist Church (UMC). Later he and Lola served the Holmes UMC for three years and the Brownsville Christian Church in Harrison County for 10 years.
In 1971, he accepted an appointment at Freeport, Smyrna, West Chester, Mt. Carmel parish, serving these communities for four years. From 1975 to 1986, Harry served the Sugarcreek and the Union Hill UMCs. In 1986 he began an appointment at the Sherrodsville/New Cumberland UMCs.
Harry officially retired in 1990 but continued his pastoral work as a part-time pastor at the Tippecanoe UMC for four years. In 1994, he became visitation pastor at the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia, and in 1991, he began a four-year appointment at the Grace UMC in Uhrichsville.
In recent years, he did grief counseling for the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. in Uhrichsville.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed fly-fishing, golfing, and bowling. Always present was his love of music, and he performed with many local vocal groups over the years.
He is survived by his wife Lola; his brother Robert of Uhrichsville; his two sons, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
A public viewing for Rev. Harry “Bud” Milligan will be held at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. on Sunday, December 20, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Uhrichsville on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 2 p.m., with the Pastor Jim McConnell, Rev. Lyle Warren and Rev. Don Kraps officiating.
Lola and the entire Milligan family thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the New Dawn Retirement community and Community Hospice of New Philadelphia for the professional care that they provided for Harry over the past months. We also thank the many others who have provided assistance and loving condolences during this time.
