Susie Barnett Obituary

~ The Obituary ~

Susie Juanita Barnett, age 91, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 27, 2021 from Providence Hospital in Detroit, MI

Juanita was born January 17, 1930 in Dennison, OH to the late Fannie Mae and James Garner.   She graduated from Dennison High School in 1948 and went on to marry the love of her life, Melvin Barnett, on February 18, 1950, and one son, Melvin James “Jimmy” Barnett, Jr. was blessed to that union, both of whom preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her parents; two great grandchildren, Jessica and Dartrell Robinson; three sisters,  L. Wilma Roberts, Thelma E. Fulp, Mattie L. Watkins, and two brothers; James Garner and Willie Cornelius Garner; niece Jacqueline Upshaw Gadison, who called her daily to discuss “The Young and the Restless”.

Juanita’s mother, Fannie Mae Hill Garner, was the youngest of eleven children born in Acworth GA to Orange and Sarah Francis Hill.  Juanita was the last living of over 60 grandchildren.   With the passing of Juanita, we mourn the passing of a generation.

In 1956 Juanita and Melvin  moved to Detroit, MI where Juanita attended Lewis Business College and started her career as an Administrative Assistant in the insurance industry.  She was successful in her career and worked for several firms before retiring in 1995.

Juanita was a believer and a born-again Christian.  She was baptized by Rev. Henry Clark at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in 1943 in the backwater of Midvale.   She joined Springhill Baptist Church in May 1976.  She loved to sing and for many years sang in the Springhill Gospel Choir traveling throughout the eastern and southern states blessing many with song.   She later joined Macedonia Baptist Church where she remained an active member until her health declined in recent years.

Family was very important to Juanita.   Not just her beloved son,  grandchildren and siblings, but all of her family and most remember the many trips made over the years between Michigan and Ohio and felt blessed and lucky  each time they  experienced her presence and beautiful smile.
